Students of MI: Charlie
“I chose Northern Michigan University because of how strong the English department is and how wonderful the faculty are. During my time here I’ve really come to realize how fortunate I am to have all of the professors I’ve had, and all of the graduate assistants who have guided me in the right direction to become a professional writer. When writing a story, my professors have taught me to always make sure I have well developed characters, so that they have depth.
I’m a first-generation student, and it’s awesome to be the first in my family to attend college. The second semester of my sophomore year was when I knew I made the right decision to come to Northern Michigan University. During that year, I was taking two creative writing courses, and it was a lot different than typical literature classes. My professor, who ended up becoming my supervisor for my internship, alongside my teaching assistant, both molded me into a better author and writer. I’m so thankful for that.
I’ve also been a member of the NMU Hip Hop Dance Crew since freshmen year, and now I’m one of the original members on the team. It’s been very fun, because along with being a writer, I love to perform—it’s a big part of who I am.
Five years from now, I know I will look back on my experience and think about all the friends I’ve made and the amazing people I’ve met. I’ve had so many experiences here like being a brand ambassador, which I could have never imagined my freshman year. This is a new program to our university, and I’m so glad I am able to be a part of it.”
