Lake Superior State University

Superior State University is one of Michigan’s most affordable public universities with One-Rate at Lake State tuition for all. Located in Sault Sainte Marie, Michigan and surrounded by three Great Lakes, LSSU is an unsurpassed location for research, focusing on real-world experiences. Well known for programs such as fisheries and wildlife management, engineering, nursing, criminal justice, and fire science; Lake State is also leading the way with innovative new programs, including cannabis chemistry and cannabis business.

“The biggest factor in my decision to come to Lake Superior State was the smaller school dynamic. This was important for me. Even though there are still a good amount of people at this university, the ratio between students and teachers is smaller, so I get more one on one time with professors and a great academic experience.”

“In high school, I was in robotics, and Lake Superior State University is a great school for students interested in robotics. Now that I’m here, almost every single class I’ve taken applies directly to what I want to do in the future. My favorite part at LSSU is hanging out with the friends I’ve made. The campus also has a lot of opportunities to explore, and there’s often free season passes to visit places through the university, so we’ve had a lot of fun experiences together.”

“One of the reasons why I came to Lake Superior State was due to the campus size. The smaller student body and classrooms were really attractive to me, and over the years it has really helped me academically. I always say this to people who come and check out the school: the professors here actually try to get to know you, and they want to help you. It’s easy for students to talk to their professors during office hours. If it weren’t for that, I wouldn’t be performing as well academically.”

“I chose to come to Lake Superior State because it has a really good robotics program and a strong engineering department. Financial aid also played a very big role in my decision to come here. The small class sizes really help as well, because the professors know you by name and they can help you do what you need to do.”

“I originally came to Lake Superior State for the engineering program. Besides the academics, I love the campus —­^­it’s beautiful. I love the outdoors, so Sault Ste. Marie is a great area for that. But really, I love the professors here. LSSU professors have a lot of experience in their fields, so they have academic knowledge and practical knowledge of what they’re teaching. Professors know what’s really important for you to know and what employers will expect from you.”

I’m getting what I want out of Lake Superior State, whereas I might not have the exact same opportunities elsewhere. I graduated high school with around 80 people. So, coming from a small high school, I wanted that small-town personal feel and be somewhere where I could get one-on-one attention from professors.”

Here at Lake Superior State, we have direct access to our professors and they’re very open with us. Some of them will even give you their cell phone numbers if you need it. Professors are a different breed up here, and they’re all just genuinely nice people.”

Because LSSU is a smaller school, there is more opportunity. I have so many different interests, and that led me to having three majors, which is possible at a smaller school like LSSU.”

“The professors here have all been so supportive, and that’s something I’m so thankful for. One time I went to see one of my chemistry professors and I was so stressed out, and my professor gave me a candy bar. I can go to them with questions and they work really hard to help me out. I think that’s what’s so special about Lake Superior State.”

“I chose to come here because the campus is the right size for me. I really like the small class sizes. I also like living in the Upper Peninsula. I’m really into outdoor activities and camping, and you can drive just an hour out of town and basically be in the middle of nowhere, so it’s really good to go hunting, fishing and camping.”

I feel like going into college a lot of students might think their professors are not going to know them. The fact that I can walk down the hallway and professors greet me by my first name and get to know me on a personal basis is really rewarding.”

That’s when I learned what their amazing programs have to offer, and that it was where I was meant to be. I want to work with professional athletes, and Lake State’s kinesiology program is helping me reach that goal.”

“I came up to Lake Superior State on a visit, and a professor here named Dr. Steven Johnson gave my mom and I a tour of the labs and other places on campus. I thought that was interesting because I wasn’t as interested in LSSU at the time, and he still took the time out of his day to show me around. That left a big impression on me and I decided to look more into the school after that.”
